Our Story

We started small
on purpose.

Northwind is a small-batch roastery in Portland, Oregon. We source directly, roast to order, and care more about the cup than about scaling.

The Beginning

A buyer who got tired of not knowing the farmers.

Jamie Holloway spent seven years as a green coffee buyer for a large import house in San Francisco. He was good at it — cupping hundreds of samples a season, building spreadsheets, negotiating contracts. He was also increasingly uncomfortable with how little he actually knew about where the coffee came from.

In 2018, he moved to Portland, invested his savings in a 15-kilo Diedrich roaster, and signed a lease on a 1,200-square-foot space on Alberta Street. The first batch he sold was 40 bags of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe to people he knew personally. He drove most of them himself.

That directness is still the point. We are not trying to be the biggest. We are trying to be the most honest — about where the coffee comes from, what we paid for it, how it's roasted, and what it actually tastes like.

What we actually believe

Not principles we invented for the website. Things that shape every decision.

Direct Trade

We buy from farmers, not brokers. Every origin relationship is personal — we know the farms, we've walked the rows, and we pay above the specialty floor.

Seasonal sourcing

Coffee is an agricultural crop. We rotate offerings as harvests come in, which means we don't always have the same coffees. We think that's a feature.

Roasted fresh

Every bag leaves Portland within 48 hours of the roast date. We don't maintain warehouse inventory. If it's on the site, it's in the roaster this week.

Honest pricing

We charge what we need to pay farmers fairly, run the business sustainably, and put money into better equipment. We don't mark up for the story.

Where we source

Three countries, three long-term relationships. We've visited every farm we buy from.
